Longford County Council have issued a flood risk alert ahead of tomorrow's bad weather
Longford County Council have issued a flood risk alert ahead of tomorrow's bad weather.
While Longford is not one of the 7 counties under a yellow rain warning, there is a yellow wind warning in place with heavy downpours also expected.
The council stated that "after a week of heavy rain, rivers are near bank-full and soils are saturated" adding that, "any extra rain could cause river flooding."
In advising people to stay informed and plan ahead, the council offered a series of guidelines on how best to stay safe.
They suggest taking extra care on exposed roads and bridges tomorrow while the wind warning is in operation from 3am until 9pm tomorrow night and to also watch out for fallen debris and branches.
If in the event you come across fallen ESB wires on the road, steer clear and instead report it to the ESB on 1800 372 999.
Should your electricity go, power outages can be tracked in real time on powercheck.ie
The council also strongly suggests checking in on older people and neighbours, particularly those who may be alone or vulnerable.
With regard to potential flooding, they advise allowing for extra travel time on Tuesday morning and to "expect surface water, debris and poor visibility while on the road."
They also suggest staying away from rivers, streams, and canals which may burst their banks in the event of significant downpours, and also advise keeping pets and children away from floodwater.
