November is Diabetes Awareness Month and World Diabetes Day falls on November 14 to celebrate the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, who co-discovered insulin with Charles Best in 1922.

Banting's birthday was chosen to honour this life-saving discovery, which is crucial for the treatment of diabetes.

The day has been observed annually since 1991 as the world's largest diabetes awareness campaign.

Gaelscoil Longfoirt marked the day by having a Lá Gorm.

Múinteoir Mary Corkery explained, “We have had a couple of children over the years with Diabetes and at the moment we have our Super hero Sasha in Rang 1.

“The advancements in knowledge and treatments have been amazing since we had our first pupil with Diabetes just 10 years ago. It's hard to believe that there was a time that getting Diabetes as a child meant you would not live into adulthood. Hence Type 1 Diabetes originally being called Juvenile Diabetes.”

Múinteoir Mary continued, “On our Lá Gorm the whole school came together in assembly and Sasha read us a wonderful story about what Diabetes is and how it is her superpower. She showed everybody her insulin pump and blood sugar monitor. Sasha was amazing at highlighting the day to day reality of living with Type 1 Diabetes.”

The future is definitely bright when we have a Superhero like Sasha.
