As of January 2026, there will be an additional 3 speed van zones in Longford, the Garda Press Office have announced.
The new speed van locations in Longford are part of an ongoing road safety campaign which will see a total of 390 new zones come into effect across Ireland on New Years Day. This brings the total number of speed van zones nationwide to 1,901.
The precise locations of the 3 new speed van zones in Longford will not be disclosed until January 1.
According to the press office, there was also 1 community requested speed camera zone for Longford.
A 'community request' is a location that has been highlighted by Garda divisions as a blackspot for speeding activity, and can arise from concerns voiced by the community or observations of local Gardaí.
Once the request is reviewed, and, if deemed appropriate, the location is then forwarded to the relevant area manager of GoSafe, the service provider for safety cameras, who in turn then visits the scene to determine if there are any locations in the area that would be suitable for the safe deployment of a speed camera van.
A speed survey is then conducted which will ultimately inform the decision on whether or not to include the location on the list of new speed zones.
It is hoped the 390 additional new speed camera zones across Ireland will help reduce road traffic accidents.
According to Gardaí, 2025 sadly recorded the highest number of road deaths in over a decade.
As the Christmas festivities get underway, Longford County Council have warned motorists of the repercussions of speeding, cautioning them not to turn speed into sadness.
The council posted on their social media, “Speed limits are not targets, slow down as you enter towns and villages, and adjust your speed for winter roads. Speeding kills. Kill your speed.”
