A planning application has been lodged for the construction of a significant multi million euro housing development in Longford town.

Forty-eight hours shy of Christmas Day, AMC Developments Ltd submitted a planning application with Longford County Council planners seeking the go ahead for the construction of an ambitious residential development of 54 new houses at Connaught Road in Longford town.

In February 2024, the local authority gave the green light to AMC Developments Ltd to proceed with the construction of 42 new houses at the same location with fourteen conditions attached.

However, the local authority decision was subsequently appealed to An Bord Pleanála and they ruled that permission shouldn’t be granted as the 42-house plan was ‘an unacceptably low density of development’.

In refusing the application An Bord Pleanála (now An Coimisiún Pleanála) said: “By inadequately addressing the street and by proposing an unacceptably low density of development, the proposed development does not respond satisfactorily to the town centre location, would be contrary to Development Management Standard of the Longford County Development Plan.”

The revised plans submitted by AMC Developments Ltd on December 23 provide for the demolition of on-site derelict structures, together with the construction of a residential development of 54 new houses - 12 houses more than they proposed in February 2024.

The houses will comprise ten one-bedroom single storey semi-detached houses, two two-bedroom single storey detached houses, four three-bedroom two storey semi-detached houses, twenty two-bedroom two storey terraced houses in four blocks: one block of four units, two blocks of five units, one block of six units, and eighteen three-bedroom two storey terraced houses in six blocks of three units in each block.

The proposed plan submitted by AMC Developments Ltd also incorporates all ancillary site and services works, with vehicular access from Connaught Road and proposed new road from Connaught Road to Little Water Street as granted under PL17/148 and subsequent extension of duration PL/21/192.
