The work of Longford’s biodiversity officer Adam Mulvihill in protecting the natural heritage of the county has been highlighted and praised by The Heritage Council as part of a series in which figures within the sector are recognised for their success.

Acknowledging Mr Mulvihill’s contribution, The Heritage Council said, “he is passionate about minimising the negative impacts people can have on their surrounding environment, and believes that to make lasting positive impacts on our ecosystems and species, we need to make as many people as possible interested in the biodiversity that surrounds them.”

The Heritage Council went on to list a number of notable successes which occurred under his watch, including:

  • The launch of a scheme which enabled Birdwatching Backpack Kits from Longford Libraries.
  • The hugely popular Longford Boglands Wildlife workbook which will be the first in a series of workbooks on Longford’s ecosystems.
  • The proposed Heritage Orchard in The Mall in Longford town, in partnership with Sports Partnership.
  • Longford Biodiversity Summer School 2025, a free summer school focusing on biodiversity which, due to its popularity, will be repeated again this year!
  • The launch of the Longford Biodiversity Action Plan 2025 – 2030 last September
  • Hedgerow survey and training events. Last year, a hedgerow survey was conducted and completed in Longford. Through continued collaboration with Teagasc, there were training events for landowners in hedgerow planting, laying, and coppicing

Prior to taking up the role of Biodiversity Officer in Longford, Mr Mulvihill worked in a range of environmental roles including as a laboratory technician, a research assistant with the Marine Institute in Mayo, and in waste enforcement.
