The call for more affordable housing in Longford was repeated today following the recent announcement by Housing Minister James Browne that the Buy & Renew Scheme would "be significantly expanded" to ensure that even more long‑term vacant and derelict properties across Ireland will be transformed into high‑quality social homes.
Councillors in Longford however have for some time now campaigned for less social housing and more affordable housing as the demand for such is not currently being met within the county.
In response to Minister Browne’s statement, Councillor Niall Gannon said that while he welcomed the revitalisation of vacant and derelict properties, affordable housing was still urgently needed in Longford
Said Cllr Gannon, “I welcome any initiative that brings vacant and derelict properties back into use. Nobody wants to see buildings lying idle while families are struggling for housing. However, what we urgently need in Longford is a far greater focus on affordable housing for young working couples and individuals who are earning but simply cannot bridge the gap to buy or build.”
He added, “Longford has a strong workforce employed within the town and its environs - in retail, healthcare, education, small business and industry - and we must ensure those people can afford to live in the communities they serve. If we fail to deliver affordable purchase and cost-rental options, we risk losing working families to neighbouring counties.”
“Social housing has its place and must support those most in need. But the missing middle in Longford - the working couple on ordinary incomes - needs real, practical delivery of affordable homes. That should now be the priority.”
“Our goal should be simple: keep our young families in Longford, strengthen our local economy, and build sustainable communities where people can live and work locally.”
