The scene at Teffia Park the morning after the double stabbing
A proposal has been submitted by Cllr Peggy Nolan to invite Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan, and Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly, to Longford in the wake of the double stabbing which resulted in a man being dumped outside the Garda station. The motion was seconded by Cllr Niall Gannon.
“This is too serious and it’s going on too long,” she said.
Addressing the negative image being attached to the town, Cllr Nolan added, “The weatherman from Virgin Media was in Longford the other night reporting the weather and what he said was, without even blinking, pointed to the Market Square and said it’s always raining in Longford. So now we’re wet and windy as well as troublesome!

“This all has to stop now. There’s too much negativity. We need to invite the Minister for Justice and the Garda Commissioner to meet with us and we want to know why, of the 167 new Gardai that passed out in Templemore, why this county didn’t get even one of them?”
Cllr Nolan added, “This has to stop and we were elected by the people to ensure it does stop.”
In response, Cathaoirleach Garry Murtagh said he was sure that “something could be sorted out” to facilitate Cllr Nolan’s request.
