Man in Longford court charged with theft of St Mel’s Cathedral mass card donations

A 32 year old man charged with having stolen envelopes from the mass card donation box in St Mel’s Cathedral in Longford town has been remanded on bail.

Robert Malone, of no fixed abode in Mullingar, was brought before Judge Bernadette Owens by arresting Garda Tomas Connaughton during a recent sitting of Longford District Court. 

Mr Malone is alleged to have taken the mass envelopes, which contained an unknown value, on January 26 last. 

He was arrested in St Mel’s Cathedral by Garda Connaughton at 3.20pm that same day in respect of offences under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice (theft and fraud offences) Act 2001.

In granting bail, Judge Owens imposed a number of conditions, including that Mr Malone stay out of Longford except for court appearances; that he reside at the Athlone-based address of a family member; that he sign on at Athlone Garda Station between 9am and 9pm, and that he maintain a curfew of between 10pm and 7am.
