Four brothers Gavin, Derek, Alan and Fergus McHugh all ran the Tony McGowan Half Marathon near their late father’s home in aid of County Longford Hospice Homecare in St Joseph's.

They ran the half marathon at Drumkeerin on the shores of Lough Allen on Sunday, February 15 to raise funds in memory of their dad, Peter, and for the incredible work the Longford Hospice does every day.

In the final weeks before their dad passed, Longford Hospice in St Joseph's provided care, compassion and comfort that made an immeasurable difference to their dad and to their family.

Longford Hospice provides vital palliative care services for people with life-limiting illnesses and their families. Their focus isn’t just on managing pain and symptoms, but on preserving dignity, comfort and quality of life in the most vulnerable moments.

Whether it’s the gentle presence of a nurse in the night, a quiet conversation with a loved one, or practical support for families under pressure, Longford Hospice brings a deep humanity to every moment. Their services are delivered free of charge and funded through community generosity and fundraising efforts like this one.

The McHugh brothers have raised over €7,000 already in online and other donations that will support:

- Home-based palliative care for those wishing to remain at home

- Specialist nurses and support staff who provide round-the-clock care

- Emotional and psychological support for patients and families

- Bereavement services to help loved ones through loss

Completing the event together was just a small way of saying thank you – and helping ensure that other families facing heartbreaking moments can receive the same level of care and dignity that their Dad did.
