Longford protest: Supporting and protecting special needs assistants

It will take place in the weekend, at Market Square in Longford town

SNA protest

Protesters will gather at the Market Square in Longford town

The protest is being organised in response to ongoing concerns around proposed reviews of the SNA allocation system and the potential risk of future cuts or reductions to essential supports in schools. While recent announcements have indicated a pause to the review, parents, SNAs and community members remain concerned about uncertainty and the long-term impact on children with additional needs.

SNAs play a vital role in ensuring children with special educational needs can safely access education, participate fully in school life and receive the care and support they require. Organisers say the protest aims to send a clear message that any review or reform must not result in cuts, reallocation of supports, or reduced certainty for schools and families.

The protest is open to all — including parents, SNAs, educators, carers and members of the wider community — who wish to stand in support of inclusive education and the protection of frontline supports for children.
