A coffee morning to raise money for Multyfarnham’s Lakelands Area Retreat and Cancer Centre (LARCC) resulted in a strong show of support as people turned out in droves at the Dolmen Centre in Aughnacliffe.
The fundraiser, organised by Edna Smith - a community development worker with Rath Mhuire and Dolmen Community Services - was inspired by the support her colleague Susan received from LARCC’s oncology care team after she underwent a full mastectomy last year.
In addition to raising funds for the service, the event also aimed to inspire other women to share their cancer journeys and get themselves checked.

Speaking to The Longford Leader, the woman whose story inspired Edna to organise the event - Susan Freeman - recalled her experience with LARCC.
“I was diagnosed with breast cancer after going for a general mammogram. I was sent to the breast clinic in Dublin and I went through some tests, some surgery, and then I went forward and had a mastectomy.
“Right after the mastectomy I was referred up to LARCC where I was fitted for a prosthetic breast, new underwear, a swimsuit, and a prosthetic breast that I can wear when I go swimming.
“They are very helpful and I can't praise the centre enough. It's very welcoming. When you've gone through cancer or anything medical, you expect it to be cold, a bit clinical but the centre was far from that.
“It was very warm, very welcoming and did a wonderful job. I'm more than grateful for all the help and support I received when I went there.”

Now cancer free, Susan said she was so pleased with the response to the fundraiser.
Joan Cassidy, chairwoman of the Failte Ladies Club, whose members were in attendance on the morning, said the fundraiser was a great opportunity to make people aware of the LARCC service.
“We really can't give them enough support for what they're actually doing now,” she said. “Anything that gives respite to people that are going through cancer is worth supporting. It’s a really wonderful organisation.”
