All eyes on Edgeworthstown talk detailing shooting of More O'Farrell

Lissard House between Edgeworthstown and Ballinalee: Richard More O’Ferrall was shot dead in the room to the left of the hall door on February 9, 1935

In 1935, there occurred one of the most dramatic events in the history of County Longford.

A dispute over the eviction of poor tenants in Edgeworthstown led to a landlord’s son being shot dead by a group of IRA men on a January night at Lissard House between Edgeworthstown and Ballinalee.

This famous event will be recalled at a lecture in Edgeworthstown Library on Tuesday night next, November 22, to be given by Seán Ó Súilleabháin, the author of Longford’s Republican Story 1900 -2000.

For many a day, that fateful night was recalled in céilíing houses in North Longford, as the ins and outs of the tragic incident were recalled.

Four men were charged with murder but were acquitted.

How did it happen? Who was there? What happened to those men afterwards? Where did the More O’Ferrall family go to?

Many of these questions will be answered by Seán Ó Súilleabháin who has researched this period in detail, and much will be revealed in this illustrated talk.

Books have been written and plays have been based on this incident which has passed into the folklore of the county.

All are welcome to attend this lecture on Tuesday next, November 22 at 8pm in the comfortable surroundings of Edgeworthstown Library. An event not to be missed. Beidh fáilte romhat.
