St Mel’s College scored their second win in the group stage of the Leinster Schools Senior ‘A’ Football Championship when they gradually got the better of St Mary’s Edenderry at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park on Friday.
St Mel’s College . . . 1-11 St Mary’s SS Edenderry . . . 0-5
While both sides were already through to the knockout phase of the championship, this was a tough battle with St Mary’s holding a slender 0-3 to 0-2 advantage at the break in a very defensive match.
Things opened up in the second half as St Mel’s stepped up another gear with Michael Flynn scoring the decisive goal in the 47th minute to leave his side in a comfortable 1-7 to 0-5 lead and there was no way back for Edenderry SS.
The reward for the hard earned win for the Longford college is a home game in the last sixteen of the championship in a couple of weeks time.
