Dundalk court: A 78-year-old woman prosecuted for Covid travel breach who claimed she was a journalist has case struck out

A 78 year old woman who travelled over 60 kilometres from her home when Covid travel restrictions applied, has had her case struck out at Dundalk District Court.

Jennifer Mortell of Castleland Court, Balbriggan was summoned for an alleged Movement of Persons offence at St. Brigid's Shrine, Faughart on January 31st 2021.

The investigating garda told the court last Wednesday that a congregation had taken place in contravention of the regulations in force at the time.

Ms. Mortell told Judge Vincent Deane that she had submitted a sworn affidavit two weeks ago.

Judge Deane noted that the defendant was relying on her submission that she was a journalist at the time and added she had raised a technical legal point, and it was on that basis that he struck out the matter.
