Louth County Councillor Dolores Minogue
Councillor Dolores Minogue raised the matter of speeding outside schools at the Louth County Council January meeting, and asked the Council to look into the road outside one school in Ardee.
Cllr Minogue acknowledged that speeding on roads was an issue for An Garda Síochána but highlighted that outside the girl's school in Ardee, speeding was becoming a real concern for parents.
The mid-Louth councillor said that there are two good footpaths either side of the road, with pupils walking to and from the school each day. She went on to say however, that parents had been in touch with her to say that the speed some cars travel on that road “is absolutely crazy at times.”
Cllr Minogue said she is reporting the speeding issue to An Garda Síochána, but also requested if it was possible for an engineer from the Council to call out to the area and “and just see have we done everything we can to make sure that it's as safe as possible.”
In response, Director of Services, Catherine Duff, said that for the Council, the focus is on road safety. Ms Duff said speed is a factor contributing to road deaths and where accidents are happening is where they must focus their resources.
She added that where speeding is an issue, but accidents have not occurred, then it is an issue for An Garda Síochána.
