Dundalk's Amy Broadhurst has been shortlisted for Athlete of the Year at the Her Sports Awards 2023. Eve McCrystal is up for Team of the Year, alongside her para-cycling partner Katie George Dunleavy
After a year where many Louth women have been dominating their chosen sports, it is no surprise to see two locals announced as nominees at the upcoming Her Sports Awards 2023.
Her Sport is a website and content producer centered around all things women’s sport. Their aim is to give girls and women a voice in sport through daily content including video, podcasts, newsletters, online and social media.
In recent years, the organisation has helped further enhance the image of our nation’s best sportswomen through an awards night, which is broadcast on TG4. Thus, giving them another platform to showcase their achievements.
Nominated for Athlete of the Year is boxer Amy Broadhurst, a fighter who needs no introduction after having a dream season in 2022.
Last May she became only the third Irishwoman after Katie Taylor and Kellie Harrington to become World Champion, before being joined later by her teammate Lisa O’Rourke. Michael Conlon is Ireland’s only Senior men’s winner, showing how rare an achievement this is regardless of gender.
Not happy with just the one crown, the St Bronagh’s boxer kept showing her class throughout the year, adding a Commonwealth and then a European title to her collection before the year was out. In each final she outsmarted and outboxed some classy fighters.
Broadhurst has already won the Irish Times Sportswoman of the Year Award and was a nominee for the RTE Sportsperson of the Year, where she only lost out to fellow boxer Katie Taylor.
It wasn’t just the Muirhevnamor native who was in form throughout 2022, but the whole Irish Women’s Boxing Team. They brought home more international medals than ever before, making them worthy nominees for the Team of The Year.
However also up for consideration is the duo of Eve McCrystal and Katie George Dunleavy after another fantastic season in the world of para-cycling.
The Jenkinstown native acts as the sighted pilot for Dunleavy, who is blind, and together they have become a formidable unit. In 2021 they came home from the Tokyo Paralympics with three medals, two of which were gold and they continued their partnership into 2022.
At the World Championships last August in Canada, they secured a whopping sixth world title of their careers in the Road Race event, alongside a silver medal in the Time Trial. No doubt their attentions will be on another big year ahead of a possible Paralympic appearance in 2024.
The Awards Night itself take place this Saturday, January 28th, at the UCD Astra Hall Dublin, with the ceremony getting underway at 6:45PM. Tickets are available on the Her Sports website. Once again, the event will be shown on TG4 for those who cannot attend.
