Dundalk woman assaulted a female in a local pharmacy, court heard

Dundalk Courthouse

A 48-year-old woman who assaulted another woman in a local pharmacy and threw stock from the shelves at her, had her case adjourned at Dundalk District Court for the preparation of a probation report.

Judge Eirinn McKiernan warned Mary Maguire of De La Salle Terrace, Castletown Road, Dundalk, who has 40 previous convictions, that her offending had escalated.

The defendant was before the court charged with assault and causing €500 in criminal damage to store goods and shelving, in addition to two public order offences, at Byrne’s Pharmacy on May 25th last year.

The court heard Ms. Maguire had grabbed the woman by her hood and hit her a few times before she started firing items from the pharmacy at her.

Court. Presenter Sgt. Jimmy McGovern added that the defendant was abusive and shouting in front of customers and she was intoxicated when she was arrested on Bridge Street.

The Defence solicitor described his client as the epitome of a hapless individual who was severely intoxicated at the time.

He added she is not literate and has no social skills and had recently herself been the victim of a stabbing and has been left with a facial scar.

He added the defendant is in a desperate situation but has been a regular attendee with her probation officer who she has also attended voluntarily and he said he was anxious that the court might hold its hand on the matter.

Judge McKiernan said “It really has escalated’ and put back the case to May 3rd for a Probation report but she added “There would want to be a major improvement from Ms. Maguire” in order to convince her not to impose a custodial sentence.
