Amy Broadhurst has once again been honoured for her achievements in the ring with the news that she has been named Athlete of the Year at the 2023 Her Sports Awards.
Broadhurst had already won the Irish Times Sportswoman of the Year and was a nominee for the RTE Sportsperson of the Year, where she only lost out to fellow boxer Katie Taylor.
Her Sport is a website and content producer centered around all things women’s sport. Their aim is to give girls and women a voice in sport through daily content including video, podcasts, newsletters, as well as online and social media posts.
In recent years, the organisation has helped further enhance the image of our nation’s best sportswomen through an awards night. Thus, giving them another platform to showcase their achievements.
The ceremony was an inspiring night full of like-minded people celebrating and recognising the magnificent achievements of our female sports stars, as well as the community volunteers and behind the scenes heroes that make the sports we love possible.
2022 was an unforgettable year in Irish sport. Records were smashed, history was made, and Irish sports women continued to raise the bar, inspiring young and old across the globe.
This made the Athlete of the Year gong one which had plenty of great possible candidates.
Her Sports invited sports fans to submit their nominations, from which they created a shortlist. A public vote then decided the overall winner.
Among the others up for consideration for this accolade was jockey Rachel Blackmore, 1500M European silver medallist Ciara Mageean, Irish soccer International Katie McCabe, world class professional golfer Leona Maguire and boxing superstar Katie Taylor.
But in the end the award went the way of Muirhevnamor native Amy Broadhurst, showing just how great her achievements were and how popular a sporting figure she has become in such a short space of time.
Last May she became only the third Irishwoman after Katie Taylor and Kellie Harrington to become a World Amateur Champion, before being joined later by her teammate Lisa O’Rourke. Michael Conlon is Ireland’s only Senior men’s winner, showing how rare an achievement this is.
Not happy with just the one crown, the St Bronagh’s boxer kept displaying her class throughout the year, adding a Commonwealth and then a European title to her collection. In each final she outsmarted and outboxed some classy fighters.
The Her Sport Awards show will air on TG4, hosted by Her Sport founder Niamh Tallon who was joined by MC Gráinne McElwain. Details on a broadcast will follow via their social media pages.
