Yet again the weather played havoc with the Spring League. The golfers out on the Saturday got a free run, but unfortunately anyone down to play Sunday had the frost to blame.
The competition was won by Steven Taylor who beat Ronan Burke on the count back. Both players have started the year well finishing with 31pts, one shot ahead of Padraic Duffy on 30pts.
Men’s Weekend Stableford Competition 13 holes 4th February: 1st - Steven Taylor (ph.19) - 31pts c/b, 2nd - Ronan Burke (ph.13) - 31pts.
We had a brilliant turn out for our first St Bridget’s Bank holiday open. The word around the clubhouse after was that everyone enjoyed the 2-person scramble.
The duo that enjoyed it the most was Sean Finnegan and Anthony Burns. These two lads know each other's games inside out, and it showed with a great nett score of 51.0 points.
Runners-up were Eugene Molloy and Peter Marron. Eugene has shown some good form recently and it obviously rubbed off on Peter, who’s steady all year round. But unfortunately, they came up one shot short.
St Brigid’s Bank Holiday Open 2 Person Scramble 6th February 2023: 1st - Sean Finnegan & Anthony Burns - Nett 51.0, 2nd - Eugene Molloy & Peter Marron - Nett 52.0 pts.
MANNAN CASTLE SENIORS
The fine golfing weather held up for the Mannan Castle Seniors 9-hole competition. Once again, there was a good turnout with many of the usual suspects in attendance.
Peter Marquis was really to the fore, showing a clean set of heels to the rest of the field. He started in fine fashion with a birdie two on the first hole for four points.
He didn't let up for the rest of the round, adding six 3-pointers and finishing with an exceptional 26 points. This gave him victory overall. Category prize winners were Fergal Brady in category one and Gerry Corbally in category two.
Fergal started with a par on the first followed by steady golf, before carding a birdie on the last for a total of 19 points. He won on countback from Oliver Fox. Gerry followed his excellent score at the weekend with a score of 20 points. He recorded three 3-pointers in a round with just one error.
Senior 9-hole Competition 7th February 2023 (9-hole handicap): Overall: Peter Marquis (12) 26pts. Category 1: Fergal Brady (6) 19pts, Category 2: Gerry Corbally (14) 20pts.
MANNAN CASTLE LADIES
Any lady who pars the 6th has some game. So it is with Natasha McCahey, last week's winner, who played very steady golf over the 13 holes to finish out in front on her own with 24 pts.
Two players finished one shot behind on 23 points with Margaret Bourke taking second place on countback through consistent play from start to finish. Congratulations and well played everyone.
The Spring League is into the third week already, with all teams going full steam in the welcome crisp but pleasant spell of weather. And with it comes some mighty scores. Keep it up, every point counts.
