Man drove at security guard at McDonald's drive-thru in Dundalk

A lorry driver who drove a car at a security guard directing traffic in a queue for the local McDonalds drive-thru, had a dangerous driving charge reduced to careless driving last week after Dundalk district court was told he had completed a driving course, as directed by Judge Eirinn McKiernan.

The court had previously heard how gardaí were called to the car park of Tesco Extra, Stapleton Drive on June 7th 2020, where a security guard told them that he had been directing traffic waiting to get into the McDonald’s drive thru when Cathal Dowdall (39) formerly of Lissaraw Road, Crossmaglen, Co. Armagh was verbally abusive towards him and drove towards him hitting him in the lower leg, before driving off.

The Defence solicitor said her client is currently unable to work as a lorry driver as he is a carer for his mother.

Judge McKiernan had warned the dangerous driving charge would not be reduced unless the driving course was completed.

Last week, after being told it had been, Judge Gerry Jones convicted him of careless driving and imposed a €300 fine.
