The provincial tennis season got underway recently with round one of the Leinster League, which was hosted by Mullingar Tennis Club.

The Mullingar One Day Cup involved 24 teams from all over Leinster. Some of the top players from across the East descended on the midlands’ venue, with players from the likes of Athy, Abbeyleix, Moate, Portarlington, Wexford and Carlow all involved.

From the Wee County the competition included Termonfeckin and Carlingford Tennis Clubs, with the team from the Cooley peninsula performing gallantly throughout the event.

They ended up making it all the way to the finals, where they lost out on the trophy by two extra games won by Wexford. However, this is a fantastic achievement for such a small club with limited facilities.

Carlingford Tennis are now participating in the Leinster Spring League with three women’s teams and one men’s team. They will be gunning to replicate the form found in Mullingar throughout the next few months of action.
