Upcoming events to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Greenore Village

Greenore Victorian Village – Sesquicentennial Anniversary - 30th April 2023 marks the date of Village & Port inception 150 years ago.

“The line having been passed for traffic, the rolling stock, trains & carriages having been supplied from Holyhead to Greenore by the L.N.W.R, the ceremonial opening was fixed for 30th April, 1873 and the inauguration of public services for the 1st of May.

Dundalk Newry & Greenore Railway had one of the most chequered chapters in the history of Rail & Sea Communication between Ireland, Great Britain and the World.

Official recognition of its importance was afforded by the gracious acceptance by the Lord Lieutenant Viceroy of Ireland Earl

Spencer of an invitation to perform the opening ceremony. (Lord Spencer’s home residence at the time was Aras An Uachtarain).

The opening is on record as being an event of no ordinary importance in the history of the country which included a banquet of 30 courses, all 800 official guests having enjoyed free travel to Greenore and back in 4 special trains and 2 special steamers the Vice Regal Train bringing the Lord Lieutenant and Countess Spence from Dublin.

On arrival at Greenore the guests found the Station, Hotel and Quays decorated with flags and bunting, entertainment being dispensed by the Bands of the Fourth Dragoons and the Sixth Foot There were two of HM Gun Boats in the Lough with a sumptuous meal provided in the decorated Goods Shed.

After all the formalities, guests and visitors alike were treated to cruises on the Lough on the PS (paddle steamer) the EDITH.

It was reported as one of the greatest days seen at Greenore with many good days forecasted for the future.

On Sunday 30th April, 2023 Greenore Village will celebrate with events commencing with an afternoon of musical entertainment from 3.00 pm to 5.00 pm featuring Carlingford Pipe Band among others artists.

The evening concludes with a variety concert to include the Cloughmore Male Voice Choir and storytelling in the Assembly Rooms commencing at 7.30 pm.

The celebrations will continue on Monday 1st May, 2023 with Dundalk Ukulele Strummers performing in the afternoon. Further details – contact 085 - 7822791 or facebook / instagram
