Old Dundalk Society announces commencement of Summer Lecture series

The lecture takes place at the Louth County Museum in Dundalk

The Old Dundalk Society says it is delighted to announce the commencement of their Summer Lecture series. The first lecture is titled: "GNR. The social imprint of the Great Northern Railway" and will take place on Wednesday 10 May 2023 at 7.30 pm at the Louth County Museum Dundalk.

In 2021 the Old Dundalk Society launched an initiative aimed at developing skills of research, into local history amongst second level students in Dundalk.

The inaugural project was developed with Transition Year students from Colaiste Ris who presented a stimulating lecture on the intriguing biography of CBS alumni Peter Mc Ardle.

In 2022 the project was extended to Colaiste Chu Chulainn, and the students selected the GNR as their research theme. Their inspiration came from the fact that their school was built beside the former GNR railway line.

Over the past few months, the Transition Year students have been busy developing a range of skills based on history, engineering, graphics, economics, and sociology as they have researched the central role of Dundalk in the development of the Great Northern Railway.

Due to the limited capacity of the venue, attendees are advised to come early. Refreshments served after lecture. Voluntary contributions at door. Please note 7.30 pm start for lecture.
