Africa Day celebrations come to Louth for a second year

Africa Day celebrations come to Louth for a second year

The African community in Louth is set to celebrate ‘Africa Day’ on 25th and 28th May 2023, the second year of celebrations following the inaugural Louth World Africa Day events in 2022.

Louth County Council will support two events that will showcase the rich culture, diversity, and vibrancy of Africa.

The events, which are free and open to the public, will be held at 5.30pm, Friary Youth hall, Anne Street Dundalk on Thursday 25th May and 2pm to 7pm at O’ Raghallaighs GFC, North Road, Drogheda on Sunday 28th May.

Africa Day is an important day for Africans across the world and the African community in Louth is no exception.

This year's celebrations which promises to be bigger and better will feature a range of activities, including local African bands, dancers, fashion show, and singing groups. There will be African cuisines from south, north, east and west Africa.

The event will also feature talks and discussions on work life, entrepreneurs and professionals in the Louth area and recognise Africans who have made a positive impact in communities in Louth.

The celebrations in Louth are being organised by Culture Connect in collaboration with a great network of African groups and individuals in Louth, and are funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, supported by Louth County Council.

The events will feature a wide variety of African music, including traditional and contemporary styles such as Afrobeat, highlife, and soukous.

There will also be dance performances, showcasing the different styles and techniques of African dance, from the energetic moves of West African dances to the graceful steps of South African dances.

There will  be an opportunity to sample some of the delicious and diverse cuisine of Africa, with food vendors on hand to offer a range of African dishes, from jollof rice, Yam porridge, fufu to Samosa and berbere-spiced meats.

In addition to the cultural displays, there will be market stalls where you can purchase unique African crafts, clothing, and accessories. It will also feature vendors from different parts of Africa, offering a chance to experience the diversity of African culture.

The event is part of a nationwide celebration of Africa Day, which will see events taking place in cities and towns across Ireland.

Commenting on the event, a spokesperson for the organising committee said:

"We are excited to celebrate Africa Day in Louth and to showcase the richness and diversity of African culture.

"We hope that this event will help to foster greater understanding and appreciation of the African community in Louth and beyond."
