Louth County Council confirms it will hold sofa and mattress amnesty this year
Louth County Council will carry out its mattress and sofa amnesty again this year, with government funding for the anti-dumping initiative being confirmed.
Cllr Marianne Butler raised the matter at the Louth County Council May meeting, asking if dates have been confirmed for this year's amnesty.Cllr Butler also asked what further measures would be carried out this year as part of the local authority's anti-dumping initiative.
Cllr Dolores Minogue also raised the matter at the May meeting, requesting that Louth County Council would also hold the amnesty in Ardee.
Director of Service Joe McGuinness told the members present that funding had just been confirmed for this year's amnesty, adding that there was an option for a mid-Louth amnesty and that they would be looking into how they would carry it out. Mr McGuinness added that he would establish what the dates are as soon as possible.
Cllr Edel Corrigan asked if it would be possible to have collection points for mattresses and sofas, other than the recycling centres where they have previously taken place. Cllr Corrigan said there are those who do not have access to transport to allow them avail of the recycling facilities and that it was contributing to items being dumped in local areas.
Mr McGuinness told the meeting in response that Cllr Corrigan's request was unlikely to happen.
