Dundalk Grammar School students won three gold medals at the Young Economist of the Year National Awards 2023.

Fifth year Economics students Corentin Blanchet, Fikewa Akeredolu,  Marlene Ofterdinger and Jake Fahy, were awarded gold medals for their research project entries to the Young Economist of the Year Awards.

The Gold Medal is the highest accolade that can be awarded for a project entry.

Jake's research project entry was on Ireland's Housing Policy and a Comparison with Housing Policy in Japan, Austria and Finland.

Corentin's research project entry was on The Economics of Gambling.

Fikewa and Marlene's joint research project entry was on Social Housing.

The four students said they were thrilled to receive their gold medals. Each had worked solidly for the preceding months carrying out their research, and in so doing developed a greater understanding of just how much the theory of Economics applies in practice to everyday actions and decision-making.

The awards were presented in Boyle O'Reilly Hall in UCD in Dublin. Dundalk Grammar School was one of three schools to be awarded three gold medals in the Senior Category of Awards.

The Young Economist of the Year Awards has been in existence now for ten years.

Schools run their own internal competitions, from which up to three projects may be submitted for the national awards.

While Economics is not offered as a Leaving Cert subject in all schools, it is an attractive subject choice for students who wish to go on to further study at third level.

The Young Economist Awards shows the passion for Economics as young economists gathered to celebrate their informative and interesting projects.
