JOHN MITCHELS 1-15 WESTERNS 1-11

John Mitchels put another two points on the board, but they were made work all the way in Ballybailie against a stubborn Westerns outfit.

Once the ball was thrown in, an electric start from the hosts saw Jamie Durnin find the back of the net with the opening score of the game. The Mitchels looked to have settled well with two further points from Trevor Matthews and Aaron Keely.

However, a Westerns fight back saw them come up with a sequence of scores after Anthony Durnin found the net to make it 1-8 to 1-4 at the short whistle. A spectacular John Gallagher sideline effort allowed the hosts to open up that match winning four-point gap.

Killian Crosbie powered Westerns to a huge start to the second half and that saw them close the gap to one. However, Trevor Matthews got on top around the middle and Mitchels finished stronger to make it six wins from a half dozen outings.

SEAN MCDERMOTTS 2-12 CUCHULAINN GAELS 1-15

Mícheál McCabe rescued a point for Cuchulainn Gaels against a stunned Sean McDermotts at Mountrush last Friday night.

The visitors were six down with eight minutes to go. Having mounted a comeback of sorts the week before, the hosts could not hang on for what would have been their first win of the season.

Peter Tuite had Aidan Shevlin’s side in control for the majority with a commanding display at the edge of the square.

Danny Reilly and Jamie Molloy traded goals as the home side led 2-6 to 1-6 at half time. Tuite took over upon the resumption, but James Sharkey and McCabe hunted them down in the finish and such was Gaels momentum they could have won it in the finish.

ST NICHOLAS 0-18 ANNAGHMINNON ROVERS 1-4

St Nicholas returned to winning ways with a comprehensive victory in Jimmy Pentony Park on Friday evening against Annaghminnon Rovers.

With both teams on the tails of the Mitchels at the top, the victory was an important two points for the Nicks. The win not only puts the Drogheda side joint second, but they leapfrogged Rovers in doing so.

The foundations for the win was laid in their first half performance as the Nicks dominated possession and with the in-form Lee Kavanagh and Paudi Downey adding the scores they raced into a lead.

At the other end Conor Faulkner and Shahin Housidari were rock solid for the home team, restricting Rovers to one point with the final kick of the half to make it 0-13 to 0-1 at the turn.

The second half was understandably controlled by the hosts. Despite Dylan Mulholland’s display and a Dwayne Markey goal, Phillip Kirwan and the impressive Downey made sure the goal only served was just a consolation.
