Dundalk Golf Notes: Golfer of the Year Series takes centre stage

Prize-winners in the Singles Strokeplay competition sponsored by Mint Jewellers

Simon Ryan won the Arkew Cup which was played over the weekend of May 20 and 21 on countback from Anthony Tuite after both had finished on 66 nett.

Ryan, playing off 19, parred the first. fourth, sixth and ninth as he went out in 32 nett and on the back nine he parred the 14th, 15th and 17th as he returned in 34 nett.

Tuite, who was off 15, birdied the eighth and 14th and parred five, six, nine, 10, 12, 17 and 18 as he too went out in 32 nett and returned in 34 nett. The countback went to the back six with Ryan’s 19.7 better than Tuite’s 21.

While Ryan took the overall prize, Tuite claimed Division 2 with Gerard Carroll (4) taking Division 1 on countback from Darren O’Brien (10).

Adrian Kenny (20), who had a hole in one at the ninth in the Gold Medal qualifier the previous week, was the Division 3 winner while Caolan Rafferty shot 70 to record the best gross.

Countback was also required to decide the winner of the Wednesday Open, sponsored by Deluxe Bathrooms, as David Corrigan (35) edged out Paul Hanratty (32) after both had shot 42pts.

It was a good weekend on the interclub scene as there were wins for the Junior Cup team over Howth, the Senior Cup team over Corballis and the Barton Cup team over Balbriggan. The Boys Junior Foursomes also progressed after they received a walkover from Headfort.

Wednesday, May 24 - Deluxe Bathrooms Open Singles Stableford – Overall: David Corrigan (35) 42/23pts, Paul Hanratty (32) 42/22pts.

Division 1: Conall Murdock (2) 38pts. Division 2: Paul Ryan (13, Greenore) 39pts. Division 3: John McEneaney (25) 41pts. Gross Recognition: Caolan Rafferty 38pts.

DUNDALK LADIES

There was great scoring in the 18-hole stroke competition, played on Saturday May 20 and Tuesday, May 23rd. This was the second competition of the Golfer of the Year Series and was very kindly sponsored by Mint Jewellers.

Anne McArdle and Caroline Dunne both returned a 68 nett, to claim winner and runner up spots in Division 2 respectively. Lady President Elizabeth McGuinness was the winner of Division 1 and Mary Rafferty was the winner of Division 3.

There was a great turnout for the presentation of prizes in the clubhouse for this and the previous week’s competition. There was also a special recognition of Mary Hession’s hole in one on the fifth hole. Many thanks to Mint for their continued sponsorship and very well done to all recipients.

On the interclub front, Dundalk ladies had great wins last weekend. The Intermediate Cup team beat Co. Louth and the Carton Cup team beat Ardee.
