4th– 6th Class from Rampark National School in Jenkintown were among the winners in Junior Entrepreneur Programme All-Island Awards, for their JEP business Coastal Candles. The pupils were among 10,000 Irish primary school children who launched 300 classroom businesses this year as part of their participation in the Junior Entrepreneur Programme.
For Coastal Candles, the pupils from Rampark NS made their candles from large sea shells they collected on Greenore Beach. They re-used wax from old candles from the local church and packaged them using reused paper and boxes. The candles sold out almost immediately, and with costs of just €44, the class made a profit of €408.
The Go Green Award celebrates classes that have sustainability at the heart of their JEP project. The Go Green Award winners embrace environmentally friendly practices, from recycling and upcycling to using eco-friendly materials in creating their products. Leading by example, they strive to have a positive environmental impact.
Marie Lynch, the co-founder of the Junior Entrepreneur Programme, said, “JEP has become a rite of passage for children in primary schools before they move on to secondary school. The class develops a lasting bond by working together and combining their talents to experience real-world success. For many, it is the highlight of their primary school years”.
