The Louth Mavericks prior to their game with the Antrim Jets earlier this year
A huge game of American Football is on the agenda this Sunday as the Louth Mavericks look to win some silverware when they make the trip to Limerick to face the UL Vikings in the Division 1 Bowl Final.
The Dundalk based side earned their place in this decider following a hard fought play-off win over Leinster rivals the Cil Dara Crusaders.
This was an extremely tough encounter and one which went right down to the wire. Leading by just a single point, a field goal for the visitors would've probably been enough to clinch the match as they were in possession of the ball with less than a minute left on the clock.
However, Brendan Simms ended up making a great play to break up what looked to be a killer pass and turn the ball over on fourth down. This gave them control of the ball and the opportunity to eke out the remaining seconds for a hard fought 9-8 victory.
Meanwhile, the Vikings had a much simpler navigation to the final. They hosted the West Dublin Rhinos, where a mix of explosive offence and a well drilled defence saw them coast to a 35-0 win.
Both teams have been by the far the best of the seven sides in Division 1, having comfortably finished in first and second place respectively.
The Limerick men finished undefeated, while notching up 205 points and conceding just 50 to bag top spot, while the Mavericks clinched second having bagged 292 points and given away just 43.
Having suffered their only defeat of the season against UL last month, 12-6, the Mavericks are desperate to show they have improved since then.
The final, fixed for Garryowen Rugby Club at 2PM, looks set to be a tight contest, as the lads from Louth try claim a title in what is their 10th year as a club.
