FASN in Louth supports International Overdose Awareness Day 2023 events
The Family Addiction Support Network (FASN), the organisation that offers guidance, empathy, and assistance to families grappling with addiction across Cavan, Monaghan, Meath and Louth, says it "proudly" announces its support and enthusiasm for not two significant events set to take place on International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD), this Thursday 31 August.
As the world comes together to remember those lost to overdose and acknowledge the grief of the families left behind, FASN says it applauds the decision to illuminate the Cavan Courthouse in purple and warmly embraces the theme of this year's IOAD: "Recognising Those People Who Go Unseen."
The two events taking place this year on IOAD are, the illumination of the Cavan Courthouse in purple as a global symbol of unity, compassion, and remembrance; and the HSE National Social Inclusion Office's Live Webinar.
FASN says that the illumination of the Cavan Courthouse in a shade of purple on International Overdose Awareness Day holds a timely and poignant significance. It says that as communities across the Northeast grapple with a distressing increase in reported deaths due to drug use, coupled with a concerning rise in cocaine use, this symbolic gesture resonates deeply.
The courthouse bathed in purple serves as a solemn reminder of the lives lost to overdose and addiction within these very communities. This not only brings awareness to the urgent need for comprehensive support and prevention measures but also underscores the collective commitment to breaking the cycle of substance abuse and fostering empathy for those affected by its tragic consequences.
Along with the illumination of the Cavan Courthouse, the HSE National Social Inclusion Office is hosting a live webinar on Zoom. The webinar will feature an array of insightful speakers, including Daniel O'Callaghan, who will address the poignant topic of "Special Death": Living with Bereavement by Drug-Related Death in Ireland.
This virtual event provides a platform for sharing experiences, learning, and fostering empathy within the community. It takes place from 1.30pm to 3pm. Visit the FASN website for further details.
FASN says it wholeheartedly invites individuals from all walks of life to participate in both events. By joining them in illuminating the Cavan Courthouse and attending the live webinar, it says, participants contribute to raising awareness, breaking down stigma, and standing in solidarity with those who have been impacted by overdose and addiction.
It adds that no family is immune to the devastation of addiction and far too many suffer the heartbreak of losing loved ones to overdose. Addiction and overdose affect people of all races, religions, and socio-economic status.
FASN says that it hopes that these dual events "will serve as a beacon of love and support for families and friends, and a reminder to those fighting addiction and their family members, that you are not alone and that help is available."
