Minister of State for Transport Jack Chambers visited Dunleer on Friday on a tour of Louth. The Minister visited Dunleer Train Station to see for himself the opportunity to reopen the station.

The Minister also visited Market House where he received a presentation from Eugene Conlon, Manager of The Energy Team. He also met with local retailers, businesses and farming organisations on a range of issues.

Local Councillor John Sheridan said: "I thank Minister Jack Chambers for coming to Dunleer to see the need for the train station to be reopened. I also thank the people of Dunleer for giving him a warm welcome and raising many issues with him.

"Recently published statistics from Census 2022 show that there has been a 14% increase in the population of Dunleer since 2016 and there is a further projected increase of 18% up to 2027 in the Development plan.

"There is a population of 27,147 within 10km of Dunleer station, while currently 59.8% of people in mid-Louth use a private car to commute to work, school or college.

"With such a focus on climate action, its totally logical to reopen Dunleer station. Right now 15 commuter trains per day pass through Dunleer each way on their way from Dundalk to Dublin. We hope one day that those trains will have a scheduled stop in Dunleer.

"I thank the Minister for his assurances of his commitment to the reopening of Dunleer train station and hope the visit will apply further pressure while we await the findings of the All-Island Strategic Rail Review."

The tour was organised by local Fianna Fáil representatives Senator Erin McGreehan and Councillor John Sheridan.
