Louth County Council says it is delighted to announce the "Drogheda District Support 4 Older People" project has been honoured with the overall winner's award in the new ‘Age Friendly’ category at the annual IPB Pride of Place awards ceremony.

The event took place on Friday evening, November 10, 2023, at the Armagh City Hotel.

The project, which has been making a significant impact on the lives of older people in the community for the past twelve years, impressed the judges with its dedicated and enthusiastic team of professionals.

The judges commended the project for its positive influence, stating: "This project made an immediate impression on the judges who met with an enthusiastic team of dedicated professionals who have made a significant difference to many older people’s lives within their community, over the last twelve years."

Outcomers Dundalk, who were also nominated by Louth County Council, showcased their commendable efforts during the judging process in September. Although they did not receive an award on the night, their outstanding performance made Louth proud.

The IPB Pride of Place awards, often referred to as the 'Oscars of the Community Sector,' celebrate the unsung work of community groups dedicated to improving local communities. The awards aim to recognise and appreciate the efforts of those who selflessly contribute to creating better places to live, work, and visit.

Both local groups were among the 86 groups nominated by 34 Local Authorities across Ireland, marking the 22nd anniversary of the awards. Sponsored by IPB, this All-Island competition focuses on acknowledging the invaluable work undertaken by local communities to foster civic pride in their areas, celebrating community development achievements on the island of Ireland.

Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, Cllr. Paula Butterly stated, “I am immensely proud of the strong tradition of community action and volunteerism that thrives in Louth. The dedication and selfless contributions of our community members make a profound impact on the well-being of our residents.

"I extend my heartfelt congratulations to both groups and thank you for representing Louth with such pride. Your achievements are a testament to the spirit and resilience of our community."

Joan Martin, Chief Executive of Louth County Council, applauded the Drogheda District Support 4 Older People project for their fantastic success in winning the overall prize in the Age-Friendly category.

She also congratulated “Outcomers Dundalk”, for representing Louth with pride, emphasising the county's continued strong performance in the competition.

In closing, Joan Martin said, "It is a wonderful competition which showcases all that is best and innovative in communities throughout the island of Ireland that we will continue to support."
