Dundalk museum celebrates 30th anniversary

Louth County Council are celebrating the 30^th anniversary of the County Museum in Dundalk with a lecture by Dr. Garry Bannister entitled ‘A Journey Through the Landscape of the Irish Language’. 

Bannister has written several books in Irish including Proverbs in Irish; What’s That as Gaeilge; An English-Irish Phrasebook and A Path Home – Conair Siar the first comprehensive translation of classical Zen koans in English and Irish, all published by New Island. 

Most recently he published what has become the definitive Irish-English thesaurus containing 700,000 entries.  Describing the thesaurus as “a labour of love", Bannister originally thought that the project would only take about a “year or two” to complete, that was 40 years ago!   

In announcing the lecture Curator Brian Walsh said: “The theme of the County Museum’s anniversary is ‘Collection, Memory and Legacy’. 

"Over the course of the year many of our events will highlight this and Dr. Bannister’s is no exception.  

"It is Seachtain na Gaeilge and we want to highlight the richness of the Irish language in a way that is accessible and interesting. 

"Garry’s books have emphasised this quality whether it is in its proverbs or words. 

"This promises to be a very special evening.”  

The event will take place on Thursday March 14^th at 7.30 p.m.

Admission to the lecture is free and will be primarily in English.
