Tributes were paid during the week to local scout leader John (Jack) Cumiskey from Casita Demesne Road who passed away at the Beaumont Hospital last Wednesday (6th March).

Mr Cumiskey was well known in the town for his work with St Patrick’s Scout Group 1st/2nd/5th and for his running of the post office on Bridge Street.

Having worked with the scouts for over 40 years, he was last year presented with a Civic award from Louth County Council in recognition of his contribution to scouting locally.

Local councillor Sean Kelly paid tribute to his contribution to the local community describing him as a “true gentleman” who “personified decency and compassion.”

“Through his work with St Patrick’s Scout Group over 40 years he was a mentor and friend to so many young people and volunteer leaders like himself.

“During his time in Scouting he held many roles and he served in each one with distinction and professionalism.

“He was always a steady and stable pair of hands and nothing ever fazed him. Jack was someone you could always rely on.”

He said that Mr Cumiskey was widely respected by the business community of Dundalk and by the local people of the North End and “always looked out for people and nothing was ever too much.”

Writing on their Facebook page, St Patrick’s Scout Group offered a moving tribute, saying:

“For Jack, Scouting wasn’t just a pastime; it was his very essence, threaded through  his life and his guiding light.

“Since his investiture as a Venturer Scout where he took the Scout Promise, it became his identity – simply put; he lived the Promise. He had a true commitment to serving his community, helping other people and living by the Scout Law.

“Jack was no ordinary leader in our Scout Group; he was our keystone.

“He always challenged each of us to be the very best versions of ourselves, and his impact reverberates in the lives he touched.

“He became the father figure of our Group; his wisdom, guidance, and unwavering support shaped countless lives over the years. His dedication to mentoring and nurturing of young Scouts was unparalleled.

“Jack’s legacy will forever be etched in the memories of those who had the privilege of knowing him.”

The tribute concluded:

“We will miss Jack dearly, beyond what he will ever know. His spirit will continue to inspire and guide us as we honour his legacy and carry on his passion for Scouting.

“Rest easy at that campfire up above Jack, you can take the night shift, no worries to be last to bed. We’ll cover breakfast.

“Rest in Peace Jack.”

Jack Cumiskey is survived by his wife Gráinne, sons Conor and Fiachra, daughters Niamh, Claire and Neasa, grandchildren Culann and Tadhg, brother Neil, sister Mary Reilly, sons in law Chris and Gavin, daughter in law Edel, uncle Paddy Whyte, nephews, nieces, extended family, relatives and friends.
