Louth senator welcomes additional measures to protect children from tobacco and e-cigarettes

Fianna Fáil Senator Erin McGreehan has welcomed the commencement of further sections of the Public Health (Tobacco Products and Nicotine Inhaling Products) Act 2023 to strengthen the protection of children from tobacco products and nicotine inhaling products such as e-cigarettes or vapes.  
 Provisions commenced will:
  • Ban the sale of tobacco products or nicotine inhaling products at events aimed at children.
  • Prohibit advertising for nicotine inhaling products around cinema films for children, on public service vehicles and at stops or stations and within 200 metres of a school.
These changes will start from September 23, 2024, after a six-month lead in time.
Test purchasing on tobacco products and nicotine inhaling products are now underpinned by law. This coincides with the 20th anniversary of Ireland's smoking ban in workplaces.
Senator McGreehan said: "Twenty years ago today Tánaiste Micheál Martin introduced a ban on smoking in indoor public places, including pubs, restaurants and other work places, making Ireland the first country in the world to do so.
"Today, I want to acknowledge the efforts of my party colleague, Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly, in continuing to introduce evidence-based policy measures that help to reduce the significant health burden that smoking places on our population, a key achievement for Fianna Fáil in Government.
"Second-hand smoke causes cancers, heart disease and strokes, and young people who vape are more likely to go on to smoke. We are acting to make these products less accessible to our young people and to remove the advertising for these products from our children’s everyday lives.''
Senator McGreehan concluded by saying that she looks forward to the implementation of further measures on nicotine inhaling products that are currently being developed.
