Artists impression of Narrow Water Bridge
Work on the narrow water bridge which will connect Omeath to Warrenpoint is set to begin within weeks after BAM Ireland was awarded the contract.
Work on the 620 metre project is estimated to take about three years.
The c.200m cable-stayed and rolling bascule bridge will link the Mourne Mountains and the Cooley Peninsula, providing huge tourism and connectivity boosts in the east border region.
It is hoped it will act as a key catalyst for improved cross border active travel and recreational activities, including the development of greenways, walking trails and park amenities.
First Minister of Northern Ireland Michelle O‘Neil welcomed the news saying:
“I am absolutely delighted that the contract for the Narrow Water Bridge has been awarded, with work due to begin within weeks.
“This will be transformative for South Down and the Cooley areas, creating a wealth of opportunities and unlocking the huge potential to create good quality jobs, boost tourism and create a stronger, all-Ireland economy.
“An exciting time ahead for local communities in South Down and Louth!”
