Louth County Council have announced the Summer Stars reading programme is back. Louth Library Service is looking forward to providing an exciting range of events over the summer months.

Summer Stars is a free national reading programme for children taking place in all public libraries, which encourages children to read for enjoyment during the summer. Once children sign up for Summer Stars they will receive a free Summer Star bag and activity pack.

Access to books and reading for pleasure is well known to have many important long-term benefits. Children who develop an interest in reading have been found to have greater self-esteem and well-being, greater creativity, better social and health outcomes, and an overall better quality of life as they get older.

Amanda Branigan, Acting Louth County Librarian said: “With the school holidays looming, the summer months provide an ideal opportunity for children to take time to find books they really enjoy and experience reading as an activity which is fun and a source of entertainment.”

Summer Stars provides the whole family with an opportunity to explore the full range of children’s library services, including story time sessions, book clubs, children’s events, access to audio books and games, workshops, computers and internet access, and of course children’s books for all ages.

Louth Library Service will also run a Summer Stars competition to win an arts and craft hamper, just be sure to return your Summer Stars reading card to your local library branch to be in with a chance of winning this great prize.

There are lots of events happening throughout the summer so keep an eye on social media at Louth Library Service on Facebook and Instagram.

All children joining must have parental consent and membership is free.
