A man who was seen to strike a woman in the mouth before pushing her, close to the entrance to Oriel Park has been fined at Dundalk District Court.

Liam Daly (31) with an address at Woodlands, Dunleer was charged with assault, using threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour and being intoxicated in a public place at the Carrick Road, Dundalk on February 2nd last.

A Garda sergeant who was on patrol with an Inspector when they were informed about the incident, told the court that members of the public were present and the defendant had to be held up in order to stand and continued to shout profanities at the woman.

He had 12 previous convictions.

The Defence solicitor, who handed in a letter of support to the court from the assault victim, said the father of two has been off alcohol for three years, and was on a rare night out and was extremely embarrassed about the incident.

Judge Eirinn McKIernan imposed a €200 fine saying "That is based on the letter that I received".
