The Polestar 4
Polestar gave us a static view of the new Polestar 4 in their avantgarde showrooms in Sandyford, Dublin that will land here in August.
It’s an SUV that trades majorly on the coupe looks that will widen the appeal for prospective buyers. It is, as all cars from Polestar are, an all-electric affair with a 100kWh battery that promises a range of 619kms. There are 2WD and 4WD versions available.
The highlight, and to me unique, is the absence of a rear screen. I’m not sure of the reason for this as it necessitates a rear camera that’s fed to the driver in the place where you expect a mirror to be.
The “mirror” view is fine but I have found these to be hard to see because I wear reading glasses and my focal point of the mirror makes the image look blurred. When I have my glasses on it is crystal clear but I don’t need reading glasses to drive.
I’m not sure if the focus can be adjusted to take account of my eyes but it needs to be so that I can see clearly without my glasses. It certainly works, glasses aside, and is a very modern ambiance.
I was encouraged to sit in the back and along with the experience I had in a recent model from Mercedes, it made me want to be a rear passenger more than be the driver.
The back of the Polestar 4 is a lovely place to be and with the panoramic roof the sense of airiness you get is quite lush.
Polestar are sensitive to the materials they use and the man-made ones in the display car were excellent questioning why you would want any other.
Polestar have nailed their colours to the Google platform so that when you log into Google from the car you get the full google experience you get on a computer, just in the car for a seamless Google experience.
There is also Apple CarPlay if you decide to use that feature so belt and braces from Polestar.
For a car of its dimensions, it looks sporty and the coupe looks normally associated with a car that sits lower still applies.
The side skirts of the car can be colour coded the same as the rest of the car which creates that coupe look.
When left as the default colour it looks more like an SUV. We played with the in-store configurator, that’s also available on-line, and some colours work better than others when deciding to match them or remain black.
The gold colour for example looks better with the skirts remaining black but the white needs to be all-white.
