Louth based Senator Alison Comyn has been appointed by An Taoiseach as the Fianna Fáil Seanad Spokesperson for Arts, Culture, Media, and Sport, a role she says she is delighted and honoured to embrace. 
Speaking on her appointment Senator Comyn said, "Government support for the arts is not an afterthought—it is essential. There’s no denying the challenging times we’re living in, which makes it even more important to nurture and promote the more creative and enjoyable aspects of our lives.
 
“Arts, culture, media, and sport should not be viewed as luxuries but as fundamental pillars of society.  It sustains the heart of our communities, drives economic growth, fosters equity, and inspires the next generation. I look forward to working with artists, journalists, athletes, and creative minds across Ireland to ensure these sectors continue to thrive.” 
With over three decades of experience in journalism spanning television, radio, and print media, as well as what she says is a lifelong commitment to supporting the arts and sport, Senator Comyn says she is eager to champion policies that will enrich Ireland’s cultural landscape, support creative communities, and promote inclusivity in both media and sport. 
On a more local level, Senator Comyn says she wants to see several projects get over the line, including the new library for Drogheda, a new home for Louth GAA and Drogheda United, a clubhouse for reigning Louth Junior Championship winners,  Wolfe Tones GFC, and more tourist accommodation right across Louth and Coastal Meath for cultural and sporting events. 
In sport, Senator Comyn says she is committed to equality of investment and access at all levels.  “Sport remains another crucial focus, and I will continue to push for increased funding for grassroots and elite-level sports, working closely with national governing bodies such as the GAA, IRFU, and FAI to encourage participation,” says the Drogheda-based Senator, who has close ties to Boyne Rugby Club, Boyne Hockey Club, St Nicholas and Wolfe Tones GAA clubs.  
“I am a firm believer that women’s sport should receive the same visibility, funding, and opportunities as men’s sport, and want to build on recent progress to close historical gaps,” she adds, noting support for Ireland’s bids for major international events like Euro 2028 and the T20 Cricket World Cup 2030. 
On media, Senator Comyn is focused on ensuring sustainable funding for RTÉ and independent media outlets, whilst championing regional journalism. “Given my background in regional press, strengthening local journalism remains a priority, ensuring communities stay informed on key decisions affecting their lives, “says the former Drogheda Independent journalist. 
The Fianna Fáil senator says she is also dedicated to expanding access to cultural education, particularly for young people in underprivileged areas, through initiatives like Creative Schools and Music Generation.  
“When we invest in cultural programmes, we create spaces where people can celebrate their heritage, learn from diverse traditions, and build stronger connections,” she adds. “We need to invest in our young people to ensure Ireland’s unique heritage and culture, as well as our diverse communities, thrive for generations to come.”
