During a recent visit to Louth, MEP Nina Carberry had the honour of meeting GAA legend Patsy Coleman at his home in Ardee, joined by Cllr Dolores Minogue.

Coleman, a key figure in Louth’s iconic 1957 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship win, shared his recollections of that historic final against Cork. He presented MEP Carberry with the actual match ball from the game, a cherished symbol of Louth's last All-Ireland title. Patsy fondly recalled that the ball had been carefully kept under his mother’s bed for nearly 25 years.

The 1957 final, held at Croke Park, saw Louth edge out Cork with a score of 1-9 to 1-7.

Reflecting on the visit, MEP Carberry said, “Meeting Patsy and hearing first-hand about that remarkable day in 1957 was inspiring. The passion and pride he holds for Louth GAA shine through. Even as a Meath woman, I was made to feel right at home!”

In addition to football, the pair also bonded over their shared love of horse racing. Patsy fondly recalled attending many race meetings over the years and spoke about how he still looks forward to watching the Irish Grand National every year.
