Last month, Dundalk IT’s Computing Expo '25 took place in PJ Carrolls. The event showcased the work of 9 student teams — 6 from the BSc (Hons) in Computing in Software Development and 3 from the BSc (Hons) in Computing in Games Development — who presented the apps and games they developed as part of their Collaborative Project module. Additionally, 10 students from the BSc (Hons) in Cloud Computing displayed their project posters. Invited industry guests were on hand to vote for the "Best Team Project" and "Best Student Poster," adding a competitive edge to the exhibition.

Dr Fergal McCaffery, Head of the School of informatics and Creative Arts, opened the public exhibition and presented "Best Team Project" to Matcron, a web and mobile application that simplifies the lifecycle tracking of mattresses from manufacturing to recycling while being Digital Product Passport (DPP) compliant. It provides real-time tracking via Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), ensuring transparency and sustainability, aligning with the EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). With the DPP info, users can access the material composition data for better recycling practices, making their application a vital tool for promoting sustainability.

The award for "Best Student Poster" was awarded to Ryan Habis for his integrated cloud application and 3D printer system with support for remote management, real time data and image feeds, and resource usage analysis. Patrick Orjieh was awarded the "Best Individual Portfolio" for his contribution within his project UpFlux, an intelligent update management platform designed for connected industrial devices operating in private networks.

Dr Martin McHugh, Head of the Department of Visual and Human-Centred Computing, DkIT, said of the event: “The 2025 Computing Expo at DkIT was an outstanding celebration of innovation and talent. It provided a dynamic platform for students to present their cutting-edge projects, demonstrating not only technical skill but also real creativity and problem-solving. The energy in the room was inspiring, and it was clear that the future of technology is in capable hands.”

Dr. Fiona Lawless, Head of Department of Computing Science and Mathematics, DkIT added:

“This year’s Computing Expo attracted strong interest from industry leaders, technology firms, alumni, and the wider DkIT community. With 19 projects spanning Virtual Reality & Games, Software Development, and Cloud Computing, our final-year cohort showcased creative, innovative, and impactful solutions to real-world challenges using state-of-the-art technologies. Industry representatives engaged directly with students, providing valuable feedback, exploring potential partnerships, and scouting emerging talent for future employment. Congratulations to all involved in the expo, in particular the final year Computing Cohort, and thank you to industry partners for your continued support and engagement."
