Home commencement in Louth this year just a fraction of last year's
The number of homes on which building began in Louth so far this year is less than a sixth of the amount commenced during the same period last year, according to the latest figures released by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.
The department's latest release, July Commencements 2025, shows that work began on 258 homes in the first seven months of this year, which represents 16.08%, or just under a sixth, of the 1,604 homes that were commenced in the first seven months of last year.
In July, work began on 89 new homes, down from 94 in June, and also down on 109 homes in July 2024. It should be noted however, that between June and July of this year, work began on 183 homes in Louth, compared to 75 from January to June.
Of the 89 new homes on which work began in July in Louth, seven were one off houses, up from four in June, and down one from eight in July 2024. Work began on 43 one off homes in Louth so far this year, down from 74 during the same period last year.
The remaining 82 homes in Louth on which work commenced in July were scheme units. It is the same number of scheme units on which work began as in June. So far this year, work began on 207 scheme units in Louth, down from 1,094 during the same period last year.
Work began on just eight apartment units in Louth in the first eight months of this year, all of them in June. It is the only month this year in which work began on new apartment in the county.
Nationally, work began on 1.059 new homes in July, down from 1,356 in June, and also down from 1,739 in July of last year. In total so far this year, work commenced on 7,384 new homes across the country, down massively on the 36,320 commenced in the first seven months of last year.
Of the 1,059 new homes in July, 369 were scheme units, 277 were apartment units, and 413 were one off units. Work began on 2,485 apartment in the first seven months of this year across the country, down from 15,197 in the first seven months of last year.
