'People-powered' events in Louth this Climate Action Week

"People-powered" events are taking place in Louth, and are waiting to be discovered on An Taisce’s new, low-carbon website for ClimateActionWeek.ie, which was recently launched to support and encourage Local Authorities, organisations, businesses, and community groups to get involved in Ireland’s 9th Climate Action Week.

“We hoped the website would be a helpful event guide, but what began as a map of events has now grown into a ‘pride of place’ movement! For the last two weeks, we’ve been blown away by how many people are offering to share their environmental knowledge, sustainable skills, talents and time to connect their community, colleagues and friends with climate action", said Alex Reilly, Climate Communications Officer, An Taisce.

An Taisce’s Climate Action Team has coordinated National Climate Action Week since 2017 on behalf of the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment. What started out as a regional festival organised for the people of Ireland has now transformed into a nationwide celebratory Climate Action Week that is very much powered by the people!

All across the country, citizens are putting their counties on the map this Climate Action Week.  Local groups, sports clubs, and Climate Ambassadors are planning feel-good intergenerational events that prove their devotion to their county, community, and the planet. They’re also demonstrating a deep sense of responsibility to take action on climate change and to help others along the way.

Louth is getting creative this Climate Action Week. The events taking place include:

• Arctic adventures, history, heritage, and climate action storytelling are all on offer in Dundalk! 
• You can join a litter pick in Dundalk or lend a hand in a garden ‘Care and Repair’ project in Ardee! 

And in the rest of the country: 

• Song, dance, comedy and burlesque are being used to turn the climate conversation on its head in Portlaoise!
• Learning lost skills like sewing and knitting is being offered to new generations. The ladies at the Finn Valley Guild ICA in Donegal want to teach you how to knit sustainable medicine bags for Hospice patients. Or the modern menders from  Carndonagh and Clonmel.
• Over 55s can learn to cook for one without the waste in Youghal!
• You can swap Halloween costumes, learn to repair your clothes, mend furniture and electronics and swap your stories to slow down fast fashion!
• Join a workshop that helps you become a confident climate advocate or one that connects the dots between art and climate justice.
• Discover how to make blankets out of old crisp packets in Waterford - a great excuse to get munching on some cheese and onion!
• Join the conversation on reducing plastic pollution in Cork or compete in the Cashel climate quiz!
• Take a Trip to Tipp to plant some trees, grow some green fingers in Kilrush, grow your own veg in Ennistymon or even on your balcony in Rossinver. 
• Swap toys and bikes in Tramore, and parents can learn how to navigate talking about climate change with their children.
• Under 25’s can meet their peers online at the Young Activists Climate Café or add their voice and artwork to the poignant short film  ‘Dear Future Ireland’.  
• For those who want something a little bit alternative, why not dance away your climate anxiety with a Zumba for Climate Action class or get competitive about climate action at a highly popular Climate Games Night!

With over 170 (with more added daily)  events nationwide on the Climate Action Week Map there is truly something for everyone.
