National Community Gardens and Allotments week, which is taking place this week in Ireland from 11-18 October, was marked last Saturday at the Muirhevnamor Allotments & Community Garden. The week is aimed at raising awareness of allotments and community gardens across the country, to highlight how important they are and to detail the huge benefits of community gardening for communities, individuals, biodiversity and the local environment, with a 2025 theme of “Growing Together”.
At Saturday's event, a bilingual tour of the allotments at Muirhevnamor Allotments & Community Garden took place, as Gaeilge and English. The event looked at ways the local community can come together and grow food. It was followed by a seed share and chats between the growers and people who came along and wish to learn more. A great morning was had by those who attended.
Community gardens and allotments are seen as providing more than just a place to grow food. They provide a space to spend time outdoors in nature, growing together in a community, and is seen as being very beneficial to our mental health. Producing food in local community gardens are also seen as a great way to reduce 'food miles', i.e. the distance food has to travel before it gets to your plate. See Muirhevnamor Allotments & Community Garden's Facebook page for more information.
