Louth County Council has opened Books of Condolence following the tragic road crash which claimed the lives of five young people in Dundalk on Saturday night.

The five victims - Dylan Commins (23), Ardee, Co Louth; Chloe McGee (23), Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan; Alan McCluskey (23), Drumconrath, Co Meath; Shay Duffy (21), Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan; and Chloe Hipson (21), Lanarkshire, Scotland - died when their car collided with another vehicle in the townland of Gibstown, Ardee Road.

Cllr Seán Kelly, Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, Cllr Dolores Minogue, Cathaoirleach of Ardee Municipal District, and Chief Executive David Conway opened the first Book of Condolence at the Civic Offices in Ardee, where members of the public can pay their respects from Tuesday morning.

"The entire county is heartbroken by this devastating tragedy,” said Cllr Kelly. “At a time when people start thinking about the joys of Christmas, the loss of five precious lives has cast a deep shadow over our community. The pain their families are enduring is beyond words, and we hold them close in our hearts at this incredibly sad time.

“I also want to acknowledge the extraordinary efforts of the first responders, including the Louth County Council Fire & Rescue Service, the Gardaí, and ambulance crews, who faced a challenging scene with professionalism and compassion. Their dedication and courage in the most challenging circumstances deserve our deepest respect and gratitude."

Five young people from different communities, yet linked together in friendship, were taken far too soon, and that makes this loss all the more poignant. I would also like to express my appreciation to our Fire & Rescue Service for their commitment and professionalism, alongside the Gardai and ambulance crews.”
