Figures reveal shocking fall in house commencements in Louth
Latest figures released by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage have shown a huge fall in the number of homes on which construction began in Louth this year, the lowest number of commencements in the first ten months of the year in almost ten years.
Work began on 400 new homes in Louth in the first ten months of 2025. This is down from 2,401 in the first ten months of last year, and it is the lowest amount of commencements in the first ten months of any year since 2016, when work began on 293 new homes.
In October, work began on 14 new homes in Louth, down from 110 in September and also down from 134 in October of last year. Of the 14 new homes, eight were one off houses and six were scheme units. The only month this year where work began on new apartments was June, when eight units were commenced.
Nationally, work commenced on 1,441 new homes in October. This is down from 5,052 in October 2024, and also down from 1,653 in September.

Work began on 11,634 new homes across the country in the first ten months of this year, down massively on the 57,095 new homes commenced in the first ten months of 2024. It is the lowest number of homes commenced in the first ten months of the year since 2016, when work began on 11,000 new homes.
Of the 1,441 units commenced in October, 574 (40%) were scheme dwellings, 510 (35%) were apartments and 357 (25%) were one-off units.
