The Department of Transport have announced a further €173 million order for DART+ carriages
The order for new carriages to replace the original DART fleet has totalled €670 million, The Department of Transport has announced.
The latest order of 100 carriages represents a €173 million investment and will complete the withdrawal of the original DART fleet, which has been in service since 1984.
The order for DART+ includes a total of 285 new energy-efficient carriages, made up of both electric and battery-electric carriages.
The carriages set to service the Drogheda line are to be battery-electric and are scheduled to enter service in the first half of 2027.
It is estimated that the DART's commuter services to Drogheda, Maynooth, Kildare and Wicklow will have transported 16 million passengers in 2025.
Transport Minister, Darragh O'Brien said: "The rollout of these carriages will help ensure that we continue to provide a sustainable and reliable DART service in the years ahead, as we work to expand the DART network under the DART+ Programme."
The order has been placed with Alstom, a French rail manufacturer.
