26,500 drivers were caught speeding during the Gardaí's Christmas Road Safety Campaign
A driver was clocked going 174km/hr in a 120km/hr zone on the M1 in Drogheda.
It comes as part of the An Garda Siochána's Christmas Road Safety Campaign, which ran from December 1st to January 5th.
Gardaí reported 26 road fatalities during that period an increase on 17 from the same period in 2024.
There were also over 70 serious collisions that resulted in a number of people receiving serious and life-threatening injuries, a drop from 85 on the same period in 2024.
They reported two road fatalities in 2026 so far.

The number of people arrested for driving under the influence was down in 2025 from 939 during the same campaign in 2024.
There was almost an even split of drivers caught driving under the influence of alcohol (56%) and drugs (44%).
Speeding detections almost doubled compared to 2024, with 26,500 drivers caught speeding, as opposed to over 13,500 the year previous.
One driver was clocked going 237km/hr in a 100km/hr on the N7 in Co. Kildare.
Gardaí also seized just under 3,000 vehicles for a range of offences, including 59% as a result of drivers driving without insurance.
Gardaí also issued nearly 1,700 Fixed Charge Notices for mobile phone use, while there was over 450 issued for non-wearing of seatbelts.
